OVERVIEW:
In Japanese culture, writing one’s name in red ink is believed to bring a shortened life as names on tombstones are marked with red. The Japanese characters on the front cover is one of the protagonists. ‘Naoko’ [直子] is etched onto a gravestone to signal foreshadowing. Furthermore, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world which further brings attention to this theme of mortality and mental health within the art direction.
